Helge Marcus Ingstad (
December 30,
1899 -
March 29,
2001) was a
Norwegian explorer. After mapping some Norse settlements, Ingstad and his wife Anne Stine found remnants of a
Viking settlement in
L'Anse aux Meadows in
Newfoundland. Ingstad later authored the monumental work
The Land of Feast and Famine. Ingstad was also a trapper and had originally intended to become a lawyer. He became governor of
Eric the Red's Land[?], in
1932 to
1933. When
Norway annexed the East part of Greenland. An international court decided that the lands belonged to
Denmark, so was given back.
