Friedrich Hölderlin

Friedrich Hölderlin (March 20, 1770 - June 6, 1843) was an important German lyric poet. His work bridges the Classical and Romantic schools. His poetry, forgotten for many years, was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century. Hölderlin was born in Lauffen-am-Neckar[?]. He studied theology at the University of Tubinga[?] but decided not to follow an ecclesiastical career. While there he was friends with the philosophers Georg Hegel and Friedrich Schelling, and all of them influenced one another. Hölderlin became a major figure in the Romantic movement in the arts. However, he became largely insane in his late twenties and wrote very little afterward. He was was not dangerous, and was not locked up, though. He was cared for by a carpenter and his wife for much of the rest of his life.
